What's going on in ... ? - German for beginners in 11 episodes

Background

The culture components provide background information about Germany in your native language or in a second language.

The pages about culture explain the film's relationship to the real world and how representative it is.

Hauptstraße 117 follows the dramaturgic concept of the English Coronation Street.

We have got a German version of that soap-opera - started in 1985 - that became the first and most successful German video soap: Lindenstraße by Hans-Werner Geißendörfer (every Sunday in German TV, channel 1, ARD, 18.40). The audience of this serial is totally mixed, because Lindenstraße offers a cross-section of German reality.

But while Lindenstraße and Coronation Street are studio productions, we went out into real life. All the locations and nearly all the actors are authentic. So we could provide details about everyday German life that would interest you as someone (perhaps) unfamiliar with our country.

It seemed also to be important to us that inhabitants of the "Ruhrgebiet" - that's our location and one of the most populated regions of the world - could identify with the film.
